The island state of Tasmania is a must-see for birders and wildlife enthusiasts. Separation from the mainland for 10 000 years has allowed for endemic fauna and flora species to persist and develop.
With fewer introduced predators and pests several native species have managed to avoid declines that their mainland populations have experienced.  We explore a range of habitats and protected
areas to experience some of this rich biodiversity. During the tour we visit the incredible and remote Southwest Wilderness Area, a vast World Heritage protected area (weather permitting).

Tasmania has twelve true endemic birds - Tasmanian Native-hen, Green Rosella, Dusky Robin, Tasmanian Thornbill, Scrubtit, Tasmanian Scrubwren, Yellow Wattlebird, Yellow-throated Honeyeater, Black-headed Honeyeater, Strong-billed Honeyeater, Black Currawong and Forty-spotted Pardalote.

There are a further 2 breeding migrants - the critically endangered Orange-bellied Parrot and endangered Swift Parrot. And the Tasmanian Boobook is near-endemic - recently separated from the Australian Boobook. While most of the population appears to be endemic and resident on the island there is a sub-set of the

population that migrates to southern Victoria every year during the winter. Tasmanian sub-species of several mainland birds occur, like Tasmanian Wedge-tailed Eagle (endangered in Tasmania), Azure kingfisher, Striated Fieldwren and Superb Fairy-wren, among others.

We will also be looking for mammals, like Echidna, Platypus, Bennet’s Wallaby and Tasmanian Pademelon.  Some spotlighting at night might even produce an Eastern Quoll sighting if we’re lucky.
