Travel with Australian Geographic for extraordinary
experiences from a different perspective
During this tour, we present an exclusive opportunity to stay at the beautifully remote off-grid Yambulla Lodge. Yambulla is a stunning 1,500 hectare property in southeastern NSW, Australia, surrounded by 200,000 hectares of National Park. It lies within country that holds great cultural significance to the indigenous Yuin and Bidhawal peoples who cared for it for thousands of years before colonial settlement.
Jim Osborne, the current title holder of this property, comes from six generations of colonial farmers in the region. Concerned by the ways in which current models for land management are failing on important issues such as climate change, biodiversity decline and inclusive relationships with First Nations people, Jim is reevaluating what it means to be a landholder in Australia.
By managing land through new models of co-custodianship that bring together Indigenous Knowledge, technology and science, Yambulla is producing better outcomes for land, environment and people.
Proceeds from the lodge stays are reinvested into making this land the best it can be and supporting research and knowledge sharing for a better future of land management in Australia.
Join us on this transformative journey, where the ethos of preservation and cultural appreciation merge, leaving a positive imprint on both the environment and the human spirit. As we traverse through breathtaking landscapes, we celebrate the beauty of Australia's natural treasures and the profound legacy of its indigenous custodians.

As we travel deep into the South East Forest National Park, away from phone reception and miles from other houses, we may stop for a peaceful cup of tea beside the Wallagaraugh River (a superbly untouched wilderness waterway) to observe the birdlife. Often when driving down these well maintained roads through the forest you have to stop to let emus, dingoes and lyre birds cross the road.
Arriving at Yambulla reveals a secluded, beautifully designed off-grid lodge. Four bedrooms with large ensuites all have expansive picture window views towards the Yambulla Peak with nothing as far as the eye can see but grasslands and woods populated by mobs and mobs of eastern grey kangaroos. The large communal spaces include a cosy lounge with log fire for winter and a sunset deck and chemical-free swimming pool for summer.
For your stay at Yambulla you will be hosted by Jim Osborne, custodian of this large property. While he prepares our evening feast Jim will share the Yambulla story. The story is of an ever-evolving exploration into how to repair, regenerate and sustainably manage former grazing land like this in Australia.

Today we’ll be taken on an orientation tour of the property by Jim in open, comfortable 4WD Polaris vehicles. Jim will share how he came to reject European farming methods and to view the land in a different way. We’ll walk the woodland grainfields where Indigenous land managers from Black Duck Foods are nurturing and harvesting native grain, now being used in making sourdough by local bakery Wild Rye’s , .
We’ll discover the land’s unique waterways and learn about interventions Jim and the team at Yambulla are initiating in order to increase wildlife habitat and soil hydration and how they are taking cues from collaboration friends in California who replicate beaver dams.

After lunch the more active and adventurous in the group can hike up one of our surrounding mountains, either Yambulla, Waalimma or Merregunegin depending on the fitness level of the group. A Yambulla team guide will take us on these unmarked trails, ending in stunning views over the property and the South East Forest National Park and providing informative discussions on wildlife and plants. Those who don't feel up for the hike, can relax and read back at the Lodge.
This evening, weather permitting, we’ll take beverages and canapés to sit beside a picturesque billabong on Yambulla Creek. We’ll keep an eye out for platypus while listening to and recording frogs sounds for a conservation survey. (Navigate Expeditions guide leaves tour for 2 days)
Day 5 Yambulla
Now you know the property, you might rise early and take one of the unguided, marked walks through the forest or the grainfields.
Return to the lodge for a 9am breakfast before we set out to explore and learn more about the conservation and rehabilitation projects of Yambulla.
During our morning outing we’ll be servicing the many remote cameras that have been set up around the property to survey the wild inhabitants. This is an important multi year data set we are creating to determine the efficacy of our feral animal program. Wildlife you might see around the property include emus, dingoes, goannas, wedgetail eagles and black cockatoos.
In the evening, we’ll take another cocktail hour in the field and do a bit of spotlighting for native marsupials.
Over our final home cooked meal at the Lodge we’ll have a chance to reflect on what we’ve learnt and discuss in more detail the important ways in which Yambulla is rethinking how land should be managed in Australia to better navigate three of the most important issues we face:
> Inclusive relationships with First Nations peoples and community
> Biodiversity and conservation of native ecologies
> Changing climate
