ITINERARY
DAY 1
Departing Darwin City at 7am, your guide will pick you up from your respective accommodation before embarking on a 1.5hr drive out to Litchfield National Park. Your first stop of the day will be Wangi Falls, these incredible twin
falls cascade down the sandstone falling into a large crystal clear, sandy bottomed waterhole. Relax by the water’s edge, take a refreshing dip before taking an optional 1.6km return loop walk around the top of the falls. Stopping after a busy morning for a delicious lunch, take a walk while lunch is being prepared by your guide down to the viewing platform over Tolmer Falls, this single drop waterfall cascades over two high escarpments into one deep plunge pool. With view out over the National Park this spot is absolutely stunning. Swimming is not permitted here. After lunch we will make our way to Buley Rockhole, this series of small deep plunge pools to shallow rock pools is the perfect place to relax and experience one of nature’s very own spa baths while sitting in the flow of the small cascades. From Buley we will hike 3.2km to our final waterfall of the day, Florence Falls. Florence falls is a stunning place to visit, a walk through the monsoon rainforest takes you to the deep plunge pool at the base of the twin falls. Take a refreshing dip before heading up a steep flight of stairs to the lookout above the falls and back to the car for our last drive of the day taking us to our comfortable accommodation for the evening. Once at your accommodation you will be on your own time to relax and enjoy your dinner.
DAY 2
After enjoying a delicious breakfast we will pack up and get ready for our 3.5 hour scenic drive down the Old Jim Jim dirt road out to Kakadu National Park. Your guide will provide you with a comprehensive commentary along the way with regular stops for bathroom breaks. Once we reach Kakadu National Park we will stop for a homestyle lunch before embarking on a 2km return hike to Maguk (Barramundi Gorge). Hike through monsoon forest and along a sandy and rocky creek to a small waterfall. This tropical oasis is absolutely stunning! Take a dip in the crystal clear refreshing waterhole surrounded by tropical palms and pandanus. Making our way back to the vehicle, we will head to our accommodation for the night where you will have the opportunity to relax by the pool with a cool drink to unwind after a long day of exploring. Here you will be on your own for dinner meeting with your guide for departure the following morning.
DAY 3
Rising early this morning for the 6:45 Yellow Water Billabong boat cruise. The perfect time to see the native and introduced birds and wildlife come alive in their habitat. From large saltwater crocodiles on the banks of the billabong catching the early morning sun to the vibrant kingfishers catching their breakfast off the surface of the water there is so much to see so be sure to bring along your camera. Arriving back after your cruise, your guide will take you back to your accommodation for a delicious buffet breakfast before our first hike of the morning. After breakfast we will head to Nanguluwurr, one of Kakadu’s less popular destinations this hidden gem is well worth the visit. Here you can see powerful depictions of ancestral spirits, animals, and the fascinating early depiction of contact between Aboriginal people and Europeans in the form of a two-masted sailing ship with anchor chain. Our next stop will be for lunch at Anbangbang billabong, this billabong hosts magpie geese, green pygmy geese, egrets, comb-crested jacanas, cormorants, corellas and red-tailed black cockatoos, just to name a few! After lunch you will be guided through Burrungkuy Rock Art gallery by your knowledgeable guide who will share the stories of the art here. Burrungkuy is a must-stop on your journey through Kakadu. Stroll through shaded rock shelters to marvel at the World Heritage-listed art and discover how life used to be for the Bininj. Our last stop of the day will be short 500m walk up to the Nawurlandja lookout. With views out over the Arnhem Escarpment as the light settles into that lovely golden hour of the day this spot is the perfect place to end the day. Arriving back at your accommodation you are on your own time for dinner to wind down from the day.
DAY 4
Starting the morning with a buffet breakfast at your hotel we will then make our way to our first stop of the morning Ubirr Rock Art gallery. Ubirr is one of Kakadu National Park’s most famous locations The walk passes several breathtaking Aboriginal art sites and leads up to a stunning lookout over the Nadab floodplain. With art depicting turtles, goannas and other important food animals. One of the more interesting rock paintings is that of the Thylacine (Tasmanian Tiger) which became extinct on the mainland more than 2000 years ago! DAY 4 Leaving Ubirr we will make our way to Cahills Crossing. One of the best, and most notorious, places to see saltwater crocodiles is at Cahills Crossing, a river causeway that is the gateway into Arnhem Land. This unique road is quite the place to visit.
